Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has a rich history of women who have led the way in communities to address issues that perpetrate social inequalities and continue to be catalysts for change. We will continue to be beacons of light to empower and engage the communities we serve through Social Action.

The Theta Omega Sigma Alumnae Chapter (TOS) Social Action Committee is working to implement initiatives that address conditions plaguing our community. As such, we raise awareness of and effectuate change to a specific issue or cause that limits fairness, equality, and perpetuates injustice. The issues or causes are usually regarding racism, sexism, voter suppression, police violence/reform, incarceration reform, violence against women and children, and politics.

Social Action & the Community

Protecting the Right to Vote

Voting is the cornerstone of democracy, and our committee works to ensure every voice is heard. We promote registration and voting in every election, while addressing barriers like felony disenfranchisement that silence too many in our community. By encouraging poll watcher participation, we safeguard fair elections and shine light on practices of voter suppression. Together, we defend the right to vote and strengthen our collective power.

Educating for Equity and Excellence

Quality education is a cornerstone of equity. We work to support legislation and policies that raise African American high school graduation rates. At the same time, we promote responsible citizenship training in high schools to prepare students for leadership and civic life. Equally important is the promotion of grade-appropriate African American history at every level, ensuring that all students see themselves reflected in the story of our nation. Together, these efforts build knowledge, pride, and opportunity for future generations.

Empowering Through Legal Awareness

Connection to laws is vital for community empowerment. Through grand jury participation and service on civil and police accountability boards, members can ensure justice and fairness in our systems. By knowing and understanding our rights, we protect ourselves and one another. And through political awareness and involvement, we shape policies that reflect our community’s needs. Together, these actions build stronger voices and lasting change.

Global Advocacy, Local Impact

Our work extends beyond our neighborhoods to the international stage. Through Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.’s agenda at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, we connect local social action initiatives to global advocacy. We strive to identify human rights issues that must be raised before the UN and world governments, ensuring that voices from our communities are heard. Central to this mission is the promotion of the well-being and safety of women and children, affirming their rights and protecting their futures at home and abroad.
